  • HDV capture behavior on Sony HVR M25U

    Hi, all,

We just started using the Sony HVR M25U for HDV capture. Prior to this, we had been downcoverting in the Sony HDV cameras to DV. Capturing in this way (DV downconvert), we see real-time previews of the incoming stream, audio and video, in the capture window. Shifting to HDV, we are presented only with the word “Capturing…”, no video or audio preview. Additionally the “Captured material” window now updates elapsed time twice per second, instead of incrementing in real time as it does in DV. On long captures this is un-nerving indeed.

We’ve also noticed that the deck will not cue properly in HDV mode – it keeps overshooting on fast-play forward or reverse, eventually throwing an error message, meaning that clips cannot subsequently be batch captured.

Is any of this known behavior, or is it a function of this very new deck?

    Thanks in advance,

    Mike Chapman

    Hello Mike

I posted this on the Adobe forums and it also applies to the 25…

The Sony HVR-M15 is a new HDV deck and will work with Premiere, HDLink and HDVSplit. Just be aware of the following …

When changing the decks settings between DV and HDV (ilink setting) you will have to unplug and reconnect the firewire cable. Windows needs to see it as two distinct devices.

The second thing is when using PPro’s HDV capture DO NOT set it as ANYTHING SONY! Use it as a generic device.

This unit doesn’t cue very well and goes from zero to a squillion in 0.5 sec. So set the FF/REW SPEED to ‘SHUTTLE’ to give capture a fighting chance. Be prepared for a few abort captures due to ‘not finding in time’ but on second attempt it will work. Other than that it is a fabulous device. I am looking forward to my first 240 min HDV timeline straight out to tape!

Also it is a little erratic on Shuttlepro.

    Baz
(PS. as an addendum… when using this deck in batch capture if it has problems with a cue point PPro will move onto the next in the list and report the non-captured items so its just a ‘click (clicks)’ and away you go again…)
