Has anyone tried doing greenscreen work with HDV?
Specifically the Sony FX1 camera? Just wondering if
it is easier/better than regular DV.

I’m also wondering if Keylight(part of AE Pro) would
    work with HDV.

    Thanks

Mark, we haven’t tried it, but almost anything (besides VHS and 8mm) would be better than DV. Keylight is a good keyer. Would probably work fine. We do lots of blue and greenscreen – we try to keep it to bluescreen if we can get away with it; for whatever reason, it seems to key more cleanly than the green.

I’ve been doing quite a lot of greenscreen work with HDV recently. Unfortunately it suffers from many of the same problems that DV does – high compression resulting in compression artifacts that can compromise the edge of your key. That stated, it is possible to get a pretty good key – you just have to stick with it. It really helps if the original video is shot properly as well. The less you have to do to accommodate poorly shot footage, the better your end result will be.

If you are new to keying in After Effects I would recommend “After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques” by Mark Christiansen. It is packed with great information and also has several strategies for dealing with highly compressed formats like DV and HDV.

    Mike,
Thanks for the response. I’m glad to hear that you are getting
decent results. I assumed that the HD resolution would help,
especially if your ending resolution is DV.

    Albert,
Thanks for the book recommendation. I’ve seen the book
in stores, but haven’t really taken a look at it. If there
is a good section on AE keying with DV, I’m going to buy
    it!!! 🙂
So you see compression effects. Are they pronounced if you
do the keying with HDV but then convert to DV?

    Thanks
