I am working in HDV 1080×1440 PAR 1.33. First time working in this format. When I use Pixel aspect correction in AE to work anything with a crisp edege that’s not horizontal looks jagged. This makes perfect sense to me since the image is being scaled onscreen. I have tried creating anamorphic graphics in photoshop, ie graphics with the correct PAR setup. And then imported those and still get jaggies. Is this just a display issue on a computer? Is it just a fact of HDV life?

The way I tested the situation with an anamorphic graphic is as follows. Created a 1080×1440 size psd with 1.33 Pixel Aspect Ratio set. Created a circle. Saved and imported this file into AE and dropped it in my HDV 1080×1440 PAR 1.33 comp.

My instinct tells me that this is just a “working diplay” issue in AE and not to worry about it.

One last question. Can anyone tell me what the Square pixel resolution of an HDV 1080×1440 PAR 1.33 comp is? If you know this this would allow you to work in Square pix in photo shop? Also how do you the math to get the answer. If you do know the square pixle equivalent how does this change your import into AE?

    thankyou,

I’m only half the thing I say I am, the other half are me.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but AE takes care of most pixel aspect issues automatically. And YES there will always be jaggy distortions when you have pixel aspect ratio turned on.

I think what you described your comp size as is 1080p? 1920×1080 square pixels is full 1080p resolution. If you take 1440×1.3333333 you get 1920. So the 1440×1080 (1.33)HDV footage is an anamorphic 1920×1080. If you don’t want to work with pixel aspect ratios, you can just use a 1920×1080 sq. pixel comp to design all your graphics. When you drop that comp into your footage comp, the aspect should be correct.

HD is always 16×9 if you think in square pixels: 1920×1080, 1280×720.

We always use the horizontal dimension first, by the way. 🙂
