I just finished shooting a project on a Canon XH-A1 and transferred the footage straight from the camera to FCP using HDV 1080p24. We shot 24f, and the footage is currently sitting in a 23.98 timeline. Now, I am ready to convert the footage to ProRes and begin cutting. My question is how do I prevent a change in frame rate from occuring during this transfer? I have heard numerous recommendations on how to go about doing this. The most common seem to be:

    1) Use Compressor to convert the footage to ProRes 422, and just make sure the frame rate is set to 23.98.

    2) Simply set up a new, ProRes timeline at 23.98fps, drop the HDV footage in there and render.

Are both of these correct? If so, is one preferable to the other? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Thanks

Either should work OK, if you transcode to prores first though, it will speed things up during the edit because you’ll not have to render in the end I suppose…. HDV in a ProRes sequence though works really well with my machine, but it’s a fast one…

same here. 1080i50 XDCAM HD and HDV in a 1080i50 ProRes422 sequence works great with FCP6 on my “not so fast these days” 1st generation stock MBP ( 2.16GHz Core Duo w/ 1GB RAM ) … I get full quality playback without render.
