  • HDV 1080i50 or 1080i60 ?

I’ve read through all the posts on this subject already, and was unable to find a definitive answer (and maybe there isn’t one) to this question:

If we’re shooting in HDV (using the Sony Z1) and the deliverable needs to be in both PAL and NTSC, should we shoot 1080i50 or 1080i60? (ie. is it easier to go from 50 to 60, or 60 to 50…I’m guessing the latter?)

Obviously this type of conversion is best to avoid, but if anyone has any experience or thoughts on this…

Tricky one because logic might dictate going for the higher frame rate. However the data rate is the same for both 501 and 601, so the mpeg compressing is higher on 60i. A test might be best, particularly with finding the best frame rate converter. Are you using an external device like a Teranex or software conversion (al la Nattress)?

If it were HDCam, I would be going 60i but HDV? not sure.

the answer probably lies in who you define as your primary market
even for worldwide distribution you will probably have some idea of where your product will be most watched

… lots of “probably” in there so probably useless advice!
