  • HDV 1080i to MPEG2 DVD Help???

Posted by Will Gaffney on July 18, 2009 at 3:29 am

I have completed my project using FCP and After Effects. It is a 6 camera live band performance shoot that was shot and edited in PAL HDV 1080 50i and now I need to reduce the resolution and convert to MPEG for DVD authoring using DVDSP. Somewhere during or before this process I want to de-interlace the footage.

I have tried to do this a number of ways but every time I do the footage comes out with lots of imperfections (ghosting, pixelation etc.)

Does anyone have a tried and tested method of doing this using FCP, After Effects, Compressor, DVDSP or even any other third party software that is easy to obtain.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    What ways?
To best help we need to know what you have tried that has not worked for you.

How have you been attempting to de-interlace. Its possible that this could be contributing to your difficulties.

Sorry, I should have included more detail. The standard way I have been attempting this is:

In FCP I choose export quicktime movie using the current project settings.
I then import that file into compressor where I have tried a number of different settings including going straight to MPEG2 720×576 and H264 720×576 and then using DVDSP to encode to MPEG2.
I have also tried going from HDV 1080i to H264 1440 x 1080, then reimporting the file into compressor, scaling it down to H264 720 x 576, then using DVDSP to encode to MPEG.

All of these methods have had very similar results. Whether it be heavy ghosting, pixelation, grain etc.

As for de-interlacing, I have been doing that in compressor when encoding to H264.

I was hoping that someone had figured out a consistent method for encoding HDV to MPEG2 for DVD.

Thats the best way to start. Never export directly from FCP to compressor.

Best way to prepare for DVD is by simply using compressors presets for DVD.

Compressing to another format like h264 first just adds another layer of compression and a bit more quality loss to your final video.

Oh I’ve tried the presets as well. And I’ve also tried editing some of the settings in the presets but I’m still getting similar results…

Am I better off just taking this to someone who encodes DVD’s and paying them to do it? I’m running very short of time and dont know what else to try..
