    HDV 1080i fcp7 vs. cs5

I have the Sony HDR-FX7 and am looking to just import directly from the camera with firewire 400.

I want to edit in CS5
I am wondering if I should import directly into cs5 and edit the sequence in the native format. Or should I convert the video codec first in media encoder, or should I convert in FCP7’s Compressor to Apple Prores 4444 first, and then create a sequence to match that in CS5 ?

Basically I just want a workflow that allows me to edit in, and end this project with the highest quality video codec/container available for HDV 1080i60 – so whether that is just sticking with that native codec all the way through or converting to prores or some other codec from cs5 first I am not sure.

What does offer the best video codec? compressor’s prores alpha or something that cs5 offers?

    Hi Robert,

Premiere will edit HDV natively. How well really depends on your system specs, and what better way to find out than to try it 🙂

If you have a newer Mac Pro, or an i7 PC/notebook with at least 6 gigs of RAM, you should be fine.

[Robert Martin] “I am wondering if I should import directly into cs5 and edit the sequence in the native format.”

That will be the highest quality. If you ignore your previews (renders) when you export media, you’ll generate your rendered material directly in your output format – the best quality possible. If you choose to keep your previews (renders), you’ll have a faster workflow, but be dealing with renders of an intermediate codec.

[Robert Martin] ” What does offer the best video codec? compressor’s prores alpha or something that cs5 offers?”

Adobe doesn’t have their own independent post codec. If you truly want to work ‘pristine’ you could work uncompressed; realistically this means around you have to push nearly 30x the media, because HDV is that compressed. If you want to go apple sided, ProRes 422 (the generic ProRes) is probably enough. You won’t really get discernible differences if you were to use ProRes HQ or ProRes4444. Other decent alternatives are going to be Cineform and DNxHD.

    alright I have this setup:
    mac osx
    2.5 GHz intel core i7
    4gbs ram

I’m thinking it will do just fine.
Originally I was thinking about capturing in fcp7 (turns footage into prores 422) and then exporting those files into CS5 and editing the project there. However, CS5 cannot export files with prores codecs right? what would it be?

I think I will just capture in CS5 (creating mpeg2 clips) and then continue to edit in that native format. what then will be the export setting/the equivalent to fcp’s export quicktime movie function?

Premiere can export Prores when FCP is installed.

    I haven’t used 5 in a couple of years…

Premiere Pro handles ProRes just fine. Even as a capture from FCP7

Export Media? This used Adobe Media encoder to export to any format you like.
