  • HDV 1080i four channel audio capture problem

I am currently working for a documentary film maker. He filmed him movie in HDV 1080i with four channels of audio. I was asked to figure out how to get FCP to caputre all four channels of audio at once. I have tried everything I know how and can not figure out how to make the FCP capture all four channels of audio at once. We are using a Sony HVR-1500 HDV VCR deck to record that has an option on it for channel 1/2, mix, and 3/4. I captured in 1/2 then the same clip and 3/4 and got the same exact wavelength after reviewing my capture. Which to me points at something in the machine its self is not being set up properly for it not to recognize that the tape has four channels of audio.
Next, I moved from the HDV deck to a Black magic Design multi bridge pro and I could NOT even get FCP to recognize that the Black magic was connected and I was wondering if anyone possibly knew of the setting the black magic would be on. When that did not work I connected the camera straight fire wire to the machine and could not get the FCP to capture all four channels separately or at once. I am extreamly perplexed and I believe or at least think that there is a setting inside FCP that I am missing to tell the machine to capture all four channels cause I know that the deck and camera is outputting all four channels. If anyone could send me some advice or tell me what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it, I called all four company’s apple, canon, backmagic, and sony and NO ONE is being a help. All four company’s are pointing fingers at everyone else. I need to have this problem resolved by the 18th that is when he comes back from Uganda. Preferably with the deck being the main source of input, he said if its the deck he will buy a new one or rent it, if you know of a deck could you suggest one. I want the deck to be main source of input because we have over 130 hours of footage to input and I don’t want to mess his head on the nice new cameras he bought.

I’m pretty sure you need to find an option in the audio menu of the deck to mix the 4 channels down to 2 or like you planned, capture 1 & 2 then set it for 3 & 4 on a second capture.

In FCP, under the log and capture screen, there is a tab called Clip Settings.
You can set how many audio channels are being recorded with the drop-down menu in this tab.
    Hope this works for you!
