    Hello,

We are migrating our infrastructure toward HD/SD capability, and recently purchased a Sony LMD-232W monitor. There was discussion about CRT vs. LCD, but since the difference in cost is so dramatic, we opted to try LCD (we’ve previously always used CRTs for SD work). The monitor looks pretty good at HD res. Good color, crisp, clean image. Unfortunately, this monitor also needs to work at SD, and here it seems to fail. When working at SD, so I’m told by tech support at Sony, the image is scaled to the native resolution of the monitor, with bars on either side. The problem is this: The image looks like 720×486 that’s been scaled up drastically! The image is soft, and the edges are aliased. We had expected to monitor both SD and HD “pixel for pixel”, not scaled up or down versions of either one, which the guy at Sony tells me is not possible (he suggested I spend the extra $15,000-$20,000 for a BVM series HD/SD BVM series CRT). My questions are as follows: Is anyone else trying to use this particular monitor for both HD and SD work and having a better experience? Is anyone using a different LCD monitor that allows them to view both HD and SD “pixel for pixel”? We are seeking the most affordable, professional, HD/SD broadcast monitor out there. We are using Decklink Multibridge Extreme, and are need to monitor an SDI signal.

    Thank you,

    Matt Stalker

I have yet to see a scaled SD image on a LCD monitor that didn’t make me wince… Using the HDLINK with an Apple Cinema display gives you pixel-4-pixel SD… but it’s really small on the screen (like watching the canvas viewer) and any 3:2 just distracts the heck out of you. Best solution – so either blow a salary on a BVM, or keep a PVM in the room.

JVC DTV 17″ CRT monitor works great for both HD and SD and it’s very affordable. SD always looks terrible on LCD’s

Sony is going to discontinue the BVM CRT series soon, so you can spend your $35,000 on it, and it will be obsolete. You should look at the Panasonic BT-LH series for LCD’s that can properly handle SD material, as well as HD, but I agree – just find an older CRT monitor for your SD applications – that will be the cheapest way to go.

Thank you, gentlemen, for the response. Interesting to hear that everyone agrees that SD looks lousy on LCDs. Could be that your solution of keeping 2 monitors in the room is the way to go…Geez, now I’ve got a space issue! Anyway, has anyone out there used the Panasonic BT-LH series? Bob, you mentioned they handle SD properly. Do they behave the way Charlie says the Apple does, with a pixel for pixel creating a small window in the center? Thank you again for the input guys.

Well I’ve never seen sd look good on any lcd …When I’m out at the shops, no consumer grade monitor looks any good displaying a dvd. Our dell 24 inch lcd looks pretty crap trying to show dv or dvd on it. But for hd its amazing. We have a little sony pvm for sd too.
