HDR in a Room
I am working with a room scene lit by HDR. My problem is that the shot needs to show the ceiling of the room, which blocks a lot of the light generated by GI. I’ve experimented with compositing tags to exclude the ceiling – yet have it lit realistically – with no good results.

I think you would need to have compositing tags on the walls and ceiling with “seen by GI” unchecked. Seen by GI controls whether or not an object casts GI shadows. If it’s unchecked the object will receive, but not cast GI shadows. You might want to do the same for the floor.
Another option would be to have a wide spotlight pointing up at the ceiling.

Ah…I see. I was unchecking ‘receive shadows’ in the compositing tag, but I see this works better.
I pointed an area light from the floor towards the ceiling with an include in the light for only the ceiling. Those two combined got the results I was looking for: the HDR look with the lighting I wanted.

Yep, “receive shadows” only applies to shadows from light objects. “seen by GI” does the same thing with respect to GI shadows.
