I’m looking at the KD-30XS955 as a studio monitor which has an HDMI input. Would it be advantageous to use a HDLink2 as an intermediary to connect with HDMI and use gamma, color settings of The HDLink2?

    Hi,

I think that component analog might be a better solution here. All CRT monitors are analog. While some expensive CRT monitors may well be referred to as “SDI monitors”, in reality they just have a DA converter in them and ultimately they are an analog monitor. The same would be true when converting from a digital HDMI signal to analog for the CRT display.

There would be nothing wrong with using the HDMI output of the HDLink with this monitor assuming that it works as we haven’t tested HDMI with CRT monitors. However it would probably be cheaper to just use component analog input and I would expect the result to be just as good. The DeckLink HD Pro cards already have component analog monitoring output in SD and HD so if you’ve got one of those, you probably won’t need the HDLink.

If you were to use LCD display with DVI-D or HDMI input, then I would certainly suggest the HDLink for an all-digital workflow with maximum quality.

Thanks for the input Luke. I guess my concern is also the accuracy of the colors. The monitor I’d be using is just a hi-res consumer Sony CRT so it doesn’t have the phosphors to be SMPTE accurate. I was hoping the HDLink would help fix that. What do you think?

    Hi,

I don’t think I’ve seen a CRT monitor with HDMI input so I simply don’t know if it would help. Put it this way, the HDLink was designed with LCD monitors in mind and it probably would not help fix the color on a CRT monitor for that reason.
