HDlink and 23″ Apple – color temp?
Posted by Aaron Neitz on March 2, 2006 at 7:10 pmIt looks a little more daylight balanced to me – comparing against an output to my sony BVM monitor. Is there a way to find out or switch the Apple LCD to 6500k when using the HDlink? Or is there a setting in the HDlink utlity that someone has come up with?
thanks!

March 2, 2006 at 11:14 pmHi Charlie – you will never get the Apple Cinema Display (or almost any LCD monitor, including the Sony Luma LDM series, the Dell 2405, the Sony SDM-P234, and the HP2335) to look anywhere like the Sony BVM (or PVM) series CRT’s. There is one company – eCinema – that claims to have a critical LCD monitor, but it’s 23″ and $15,000 – so it’s out of my price range. I am told that it is good. There are no “tricks” to make an Apple Cinema display look like a CRT.

March 3, 2006 at 5:01 amMost of us use HDLink for economic reasons. Often we’re using them during editing when accurate color rendition is not critical. Still it leaves much to be desired. Does anyone have any LUTs they’ve created for their HDLink boxes and particular monitors like the Apple 23″ LCD? Would anyone care to post some of these on-line or email them for us to share and compare? I have a tweaked LUT in my HDLink box. It’s better than the default settings, but I’m sure it could be a lot better. I wish the HDLink controls mimicked the controls on a broadcast monitor (even if it can’t really mimick the color accuracy of a BVM monitor).

March 3, 2006 at 5:12 pmYeah, i know it’ll never be critical for color… thought it does look awfully sweet in 1080p.
But I’ve got a pair of Sony 18″ LCD’s on my system which have a 6500K setting and they look alright against my BVM… The HDlink + Apple Cinema looks very cool in comparison. I guess I could switch everything over to daylight temps…. but that doesn’t seem like the best answer. If anyone had a LUT for the HDlink that warmed up the color temp a little, that’d be awesome to share!
