    Hello,

I’m a cameraman who shoots in HDCam. My client uses an editor that works with a Vegas system but unfortunately he can only handle HDV or DVCam. I’m assuming he can only capture via firewire. Do you guys know of a cost effective way to transfer HDCam masters to HDV? The dub to DVCam is pretty straight forward but I’m having trouble finding an HD solution. Maybe capture the footage to an external drive in some codec that Vegas can work with?

    Any input would be appreciated.

    From the Sony knowledgebase:

Q: Does Vegas have native support for HDCAM?

A: No, but you can work with it via HD-SDI, using a Decklink card.

Q: Which Decklink cards are compatible with Vegas?

A: When used with any Decklink SDI-equipped card, Vegas supports capturing, monitoring and edit to tape of NTSC, PAL, 1920×1080 60i and 1920×1080 50i over SDI.

The Vegas 7e & Decklink thread on the Sony Vegas forum brings up a few more issues as well.

Thanks for the info but I need a solution that doesn’t meaning buying hardware. The editor isn’t interested in buying a capture card. I was thinking of having a friend who owns a HDCam deck to capture the footage onto an external drive with Final Cut Pro (and capture card) into a DVCPro HD codec. Does anyone know if Vegas can read a quicktime file from a mac in this codec? Do Vegas and FCP play nice?
