    Hi-

My plan is to downconvert to DVCAM, then do my offline edit in FCP and then bring in the chosen footage into FCP via an HDCAM SR Deck through the Kona to do the online.

    Questions:

What wll I need to edit uncompressed 4:4:4 Viper footage?
Will a Kona 3 will work to get the footage into the system?
How fast/big of a RAID will I need?

We’ll only have about 10-15 minutes of HDCAM-SR footage that will need to be on the drive (obviiously a ceiling is better, but I don’t need to pay for a whole lot of room that we wont be using).

    Any suggestins?

    [Michael Pierre]
What wll I need to edit uncompressed 4:4:4 Viper footage?”

Very very fast hard drive array and lots storage in it. Look at Ciprico and Facilis 4 gig Fibre Channel systems.

[Michael Pierre] “Will a Kona 3 will work to get the footage into the system?”

    Absolutely. Kona 3 handles 4:4:4 I/O.

[Michael Pierre] “How fast/big of a RAID will I need?”

See answer number 1. Keep in mind storage for 4:4:4 is not cheap.

Also, visit this link and download the nifty AJA Data Rate Calculator. That will get you started on figuring out the data rate and that can help you pick the right array. Figure at least 250mb/sec.

    https://www.aja.com/html/support_kona3_swd.html

Scroll down a bit and you’ll see
AJA Data Rate Calculator Application (Version 2)

Then you can download the Digital Heaven Widget from the Apple website to tell you exactly how much storage space you’ll need for the amount of the footage you need to work with.

Then why not stay in HD for the offline and forget about having to do the 29.97 to 24p shuffle?

that Kona 3 Card will allow you to take your HDCam video to 1080 24psf in DVCPROHD and that wold not be any more work that going all the way down to NTSC and having to deal with the frame rate conversion.

Then there are no issues re-mastering your content with frame accuracy.

You will still need to have all of the storage 4:4:4 capable however, just like walter said.
