I need to deliver 1080i HD format graphics with video layers worked in to the look from AE for an AVID edit for output to HDCAM (not DVC PRO100 HD). The sources will come to me as grabbed into the AVID from HDCAM.

Do I create my AE comp size as 29.97 frame rate (lower field) at:

    1280 x 1080i (1.5 pixel aspect)
    1440 x 1080i (1.3 p aspect)

    thanks,
    maggie

I’ve never worked with HDCAM, but since nobody else has answered …

I’d say 1440×1080, but to be sure, you should ask the person (who is receiving your file) what he/she wants. That would be the Avid editor, no?

I’d suppose you could also import the Avid sources, and see how AE interprets them.

    Anybody else?

    Thanks Steve.
This is the first HD prject for the Avid editor, and they actually discovered that they could not capture the HDCAM footage for the final layoff with their setup to ouput to HDCAM.
This caused some confusion about aspect ratios with the footage they did capture from HDCAM for the offline.

I think the answer for the AE project comp is:
    1920 x 1080, 30 fps (or maybe 29.97), square pixel.

    Definitely 29.97.

If HDCAM records 1440, and Avid captures 1440 and edits in 1440, then you should make your project in 1440.

At any rate, you guys should be on the same page.

Good luck, sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

I work with Avid MC adrenaline and HDcam and AE on a daily basis. You will want to create your comps at 1920×1080 sq pixels upper field first. If you know what resolution they are working in on the Avid (DNxHD 145, DNxHD 220 or DNxHD 220x) You can download and install the Avid codecs from the downloads section on Avid support site and set up the render queue to export a QT file with the Avid DNxHD codec to match (this will speed up import back into avid). If you don’t know, export as QT animation using upper fields.
HDcam may be recorded with non-square pixels, but the process is transparent. As far as the Avid is concerned it is 1920x1080i sq pixels, and is the size the avid will capture, edit in and output.

Oh…one other thing. Since you are getting source video from an avid, be sure that AE is properly interpreting the video. It often mistakenly will not recognize that Avid files are interlaced and will not automatically separate fields. You’ll most likely need to interpret the clips in the project window as upper field first. This will avoid interlacing problems.

All interlaced HD is upper field first, and all HD is square pixel. HDCAM is more than likely going to be 1920×1080.
