August 28, 2006 at 7:27 pmI’m not too familiar with that deck, but it seems as if there’s timecode mismatch. menu through the deck and see if you can turn VITC and LTC on.

August 28, 2006 at 7:32 pmAlso, did you check to make sure deck control is set to Sony VTR and not Panasonic VTR?

August 28, 2006 at 7:35 pmYeah, it’s on Sony. I’m not too familiar with this deck either. I’ll try and figure it out some more. Thanks for your help so far. This is really killing me.

August 28, 2006 at 7:38 pmThere’s a button on the front that says LTC/VITC. When it’s playing I can toggle between the two, but it looks like I can’t pick both. Switched between them and got the same result. The LTC letters flash on the screen during playback. That’s bad, right?

August 28, 2006 at 7:49 pmIt could mean that there’s no reference, I’d check the manual. You should really get a blackburst and see what happens then. This is screaming a reference issue to me. I’d call AJA and see what they say.

August 28, 2006 at 7:51 pmThere’s a firewire port on the back of this deck. I’ve tried going over firewire and using every setting I could imagine, but it’s still not working. You don’t think it’s possible that there’s anything wrong with the tapes?

August 28, 2006 at 7:53 pmI had an issue VERY similar to this with the Sony HDCAM field deck.
It was somehow set to output PAL even though the tape was NTSC and the deck would not switch over. I also had no audio coming out.
MAKE SURE and double check the menu on the deck or do a reset to default if you can.
I bet there is a setting that is not right and thats whats causing it.

August 28, 2006 at 7:56 pmyou should also check to make sure that the deck isn’t looking for reference. Pull up the menu and go through and make sure that any indication of refrence is set to internal and not external.

August 29, 2006 at 1:40 pmAs a bandaid, have you tried going into User Preferences and in the dropdown menu for “On timecode break:”, change it from “Make New Clip” to “Warn After Capture”. This should enable you to at least capture your footage and see if you have sync issues.

August 29, 2006 at 4:25 pmProblem solved. turns out it really really helps when the producers tell you the actual frame rate of the tapes and not the wrong one. They were insistent that it was 29.97, when it was actually 23.98. Then they were like, “Oh yeah, it’s 24P.” So frustrating.
So I had to go into the menu and set it up for 23.98 with PD (not sure what that means) because just regular 23.98 didn’t work. But, finally, I got it all digitized. Thanks so much for your help. Let me know if you have any other clarifications on what worked, but that was it.
