  • HDCAM Closed Caption Insert?

Posted by Ken Wanninger on June 6, 2009 at 1:53 pm

    Hello,

I have a problem. I am online editing a TV series, and have delivered the first 4 episodes to the network. We have discovered an error in the spelling of a name in our opening title sequence. I need to send an insert reel to the network to fix the shot (3 seconds long). We delivered closed captioned HDCAM SR masters.

My question is this.. The insert needs to be made before dialogue begins, the shot is just over music, no lyrics. Thus, if the picture insert is made, will it change/destroy the closed captioning for the entire tape? I’m not worried if the insert effects the closed caption data where the shot lies, as there is no closed captioning there, it begins after the title sequence is finished.

in summary, does a picture insert edit effect just that spot, or will it screw up the whole tape/program? I would greatly appreciate any insight here.

    Thank you!
    Ken W

ps.. I’ve posted this in a couple forums, as I am not sure where it fits.

I think you’d only be stirring the pot in mailing them an element to have to edit into the show you were to send. Fix it and lay off a new master for em.

That was my instinct, but the Producer told me that he has sent this network a spot reel before, and that it should be okay. He doesn’t know how they dealt with the closed captioning though.

So, any technical insight about the closed captioning/insert picture edit works would help me tremendously.

    Thank you again,
    Ken W

    Your options are:
    1. Remaster the episode.
    2. Lay off that segment with CC included.
    3. re layoff the mended area with instructions for them to lay it over the mispelled part as a PIP sized at 100% but with the VITC cropped off. This is where the cc info is held and it you maintain it from the original clip, you are fine.
This will work fine but I think they’d not like having to do that. I really think remastering the episode is your best bet.

Thanks! I will speak with the QC/tech guy at the network to see which way they prefer to go. It really helps me going into that conversation with some ideas in mind.

So thanks again for your advice!

[grinner hester] “but with the VITC cropped off. This is where the cc info is held and it you maintain it from the original clip, you are fine. “

This is true in SD but NOT in HD!!!

CC is buried in AHNC and VANC metadata in the HD world, it no longer is part of the picture. This makes fixing CCed masters a major PITA!

    Hey Terence,

So because the CC is buried in the AHNC and VANC data,… can I do an audio insert and not damage the CC?

    thanks in advance

No, you can’t. It will destroy the existing data. Welcome to my nightmare.

    Hi
I am new to this forum.
I got an assignment to record 3 HDCAMSR tapes with Close caption.
We normally do HDCAMSR ro HDCAMSR with and without embedded subtitles but never done insertion of close caption.

Can you pl guide me how to do the same.

I have HDCAMSR 5500 with 3 required cards.
    Thanks
    Regards

I am outputting from Avid MC v5 to HDCam. The cc looks perfect on the cc reader but I cannot see cc EE or off tape from the HDCam. All internal settings are correct on the HDCam. This is a early F500. Is it the deck?

I have MC v5 and have a good HD cc output. When I send it to an old HDCam F500, I don’t get cc in EE or off tape. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Mark
