We have a dual 2.7 G5 and are planning to edit in FCP. Network delivery specs are as follows:

-Masters must conform to 1080 24p Mastering Standard

    -1920h X 1080v square pixel

-Bit depth recorded on tape shall be at 10 bits

    -23.98 FPS

-Programs shall be recorded on the Sony HDW-F500 or equivalent Sony machine

    -Delivery on Sony HDCAM videocassette

Can we accomplish this with a Kona 2 and fibre channel RAID? Any problems we might expect to encounter?

Thanks in advance for any advice or info.

We have a similar setup with G5/Xserve RAID/copper fibre/K2. No problems.

Try to clean off as much stuff off your RAID as you can. Seems to perform better. Make sure you have the correct performance setting on the Raid Admin utility. Check with AJA for the correct settings. If you don’t have an uninterrupted power supply, you may be limited to the selections available in your performance settings.

Definitely do a test where you try a capture with the exact same kind fo source your will be working with, and an output to specs. If you get 1080i source material but need to deliver in 1080p 23.98, you will need to determine a workflow that accoutns for the conversion at some point. Also, depending an on the amount of source footage, you should test a variety of compressed settings to be sure that you won’t have any playback ro downconversion problems. If you have a graphics person involved, be sure to agree upon which codec you will working with.

Absolutely, that’s what the Kona 2 is really there for, high end HD work. I run the Medea FCR2X Fibre Channel RAID and it screams for high def work. also holds up speed much further into the drive than just about every other manufacturer out there. That is, you can fill up the drive much more with Med

Thanks for your fast responses guys. Walter, I was also surprised by the 24p requirement when I received the network specs yesterday. I wonder if anyone else has encountered this spec? Its for Lifetime BTW.

I think it’s awesome. nice to stay in a 24p workflow throughout the project if you can. maybe I’ll have to develop a show for them too. 🙂
