Even with a powerful computer, viewing while editing HD footage with transitions and SFX can be bogged down (my PC specs are to follow). So which Preview level do I pick as the best trade off for quality/smoothness? Good or Best? Auto or Full?? Anything else is just too terrible to look at. Next, to quality check as I am editing, should I Selectively Prerender, and if so, which output format do I use (my raw footage is 1920X1080 60i Sony AVCHD)? I tried a Blu-ray template (since that is how I will deliver my final footage), but as each file was written to my hard disk the previous one vanished. That didn’t work out. Maybe I should build a Dynamic RAM Preview instead, but how much RAM do I set aside? My maximum available is over 15,000MB, but the max default is 200MB, hardly enough for a second or so!! Since I, too, have an NVIDIA Geoforce video card, I also have been playing with GPU ON/OFF, drivers, etc. to try to alleviate the crashes! SD was so much easier to work with (LOL)! The bottom line then, is what is the best methods to utilize for the above with the following equipment?:

    Sony Vegas Pro 12 (64-Bit)
    Windows 7 Pro (64-Bit)
Several ESATA and USB 3.0 external HDs
    Intel i7-3820 CPU
    16GB DDR3 1333 RAM
    NVIDIA 560GTX Video Card
    Patience of a saint

So what, pray tell, do the Vegas gods think? I thank you in advance, as I am sure that many other fellow users also could use your sage advice.

In version 12 they have a feature to create video proxy files within the Project Media tab. People have used proxy files in the past but it usually required other software and you had to go through a process to switch back to the originals. It sounds like Sony streamlined this process, but I have not had a chance to try it out personally. If you try this, then Sony will use the more efficient proxy file when the preview quality is set to Draft or Preview and switch back to the original media when the quality is set to Good or Best.

When the project properties match the source media, then SVP has an easier time displaying the preview, otherwise it is trying to match the project properties real time.
