HD workflow for a new project
Posted by Tracy Phillips on March 18, 2009 at 10:49 pmI want to make an HD timeline for a friend for a trade show. There is no video, only stills and on-screen text. Three part question, 1. What size do his stills need to be? (he is a graphic artist so can create them in whatever size/ res I need). 2. What do I need to do in FCP and Livetype to make sure I can output this HD for him? (setting hints, etc) 3. What is the best way to output this for him? Stand alone hard drive player? Data file? H264 encode to? I do not have Blu-ray capabilities.
Any other helpful information or direction to previous posts would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

March 18, 2009 at 11:11 pmHi Tracy,
I know what I’d be doing, but I don’t know if your hardware and software are up to the task. So, you’ll have come back and give me some details, such as: your version of FCP, your Mac, and some specific about your media drive(s).
In any case, undoubtedly your best bet is to work at 720p or 1080p, and probably using ProRes as the video codec. But, all of the above depends upon your answers to things I already told you I don’t know about. So…
In any case, the “p” in both of the above stands for progressive, and that is a given, as working with graphics is vastly improved when working without the interlace, which is why this progressive thing is so important. True progressive video has two times the resolution of interlaced video from the get go, and it only gets better from there when working with graphics.
So, give me the details and I’ll give you more definitive advice.

March 18, 2009 at 11:52 pmOkay… All good, your machine should be able to handle ProRes at 1080p without dropping frames.
I would go with ProRes (non-HQ) at 1920 x 1080 30p if I were you. And have you graphics artist person deliver at exact that framerate and those pixel dimensions.
Make sure to set Livetype projects settings to those specs before creating anything, as it doesn’t do a proper job if you forget and change the settings after the fact.

March 19, 2009 at 12:51 amYou’re very welcome Tracy, and come back when you’re outputting, as you will most likely need some additional help when it come to deliverables. The good news it that you will be able to create the very best of everything after editing in your 1080p 30 timeline.

March 20, 2009 at 5:49 pmoh -and my intent was to output h.264 to an Iomega 40G PMP and have my friend buy HDMI cables to hook up to his HD display. Does that sound o.k.?

March 20, 2009 at 6:13 pmDavid, as I am setting up my FCP timeline, I set my audio/video settings to the ProRes 1080p 30, but my sequence keeps defaulting the aspect ratio to HDTV 1080i (I don’t see an option for my size so I selected custom and put in 1920×1080). What am I missing here? -T
