I have a show that has been completed. Its DVCproHD 720p. I need to Export it to make a SD DVD. Everything i do seems to want to take hours to encode. This show is approx 40 mins long. What is the best workflow to use for this. I am an “old Avid Guy” thats has come to the FCP side, i just need a little advice. Thanks.

Its not at all uncommon to take several hours especially when downconverting and maintaining high quality.

It might take 1/2 the time if you export a quicktime of your timeline, then put it into compressor and compress it from there.

Thanks for the info. Are you talking about a self contained QT? or do you mean Export using conversion. When I did my first attempt it wanted about 4 to 5 hours o do a forty min show.

export self contained. It should not take long unless there is a lot of rendering to do.

I color corrected a feature last month that was over an hour and a half and exporting it from the timeline self contained took only about 30 minutes, but everything was rendered and it was on a fast raid array.

Thnaks for the info Chris this helps alot.

A cut is a cut & a dissolve is a disolve, and not just anybody with a system is a pro.

I don’t want to be a smart-a** by asking an obvious question, but do you have either a Kona 3 card or a Io-HD? If so, the card will do the down-conversion in real time.

    Hello,
I was wondering why you would recommend a self contained QT instead of a Reference movie. Is it because Compressor will still take a long time with a Ref movie? Just curious.

    Thanks,
    Benny

I do have a AJA LHe that would do it, but im not working with tape.

A cut is a cut & a dissolve is a disolve, and not just anybody with a system is a pro.

Benny, that would probably work as well (reference instead of self contained)

I usually always do self contained though as occasionally I end up with problems doing it not self contained (sometimes the file needs to go to another station for example and that wouldnt work) so I usually don’t use reference at all to avoid doing it twice.
