DVCPro HD IS HD, as is HDV and HDCAM and XDCAM HD and D5 and ProRes HD. They’re all HD.
If you’re asking the difference between Uncompressed HD and Compressed HD, that depends on the original source and what you’re mastering to. What are you shooting and what are you going to master to?

August 2, 2007 at 3:56 pmHD is a common term for frame sizes other than 4:3. There are uncompressed HD, HDV and DVCPRO HD which fit those other frames sizes.
it is my opinion to call HDV a wannabe HD as it uses MPEG-2 Long GOP recording, but since Sony is fixated on using HDV as their HD of choice, it is leading many to disregard true quality of picture for convenience.
Once again, this is my opinion – only!

HDV is HD, it is just a compressed format of HD
The definition of HD is anything larger then SD video, HDV video ether 1080 or 720 and therefor by definition is HD. When people say that HDV is not “real HD” or is a “wannabe HD” it makes them sound like they don’t know what HD is. Because by definition HDV is “real HD” Sure it is a compressed format of HD,
I don’t remember people complaining that DV was not “real SD” or that it was “wannabe SD” DV is just a more compressed format of SD then others. Just like HDV is a more compressed format of HD.

All too true, but I’m not sure they could have made it work at such a low cost without doing it this way.
In my opinion HDV/Mpeg works fine for aquisition only.

Nope, the resolution of HD is what sets it apart from SD, not the aspect ratio. There is 16×9 SD and believe it or not, even 4×3 HD. And, as ZRB pointed out, HDV is HD, its just one of many compressed flavors of HD. I understand why you may not like to call it HD, but it is.
