  • HD video rendering format for playback on most laptops.

Just finished editing 18 individual two minute clips. Each clip is personalized with different company names, otherwise the video is the same.

The company I’m editing for needs each personalized two minute clip put on a separate CD or DVD for playback on a laptop pc.

More than one laptop will be used for playing back these disc so what ever format I use for final delivery it must be as universal as possible and playback on most pc laptop.

The edited video on my timeline is “HD 1280 x 720 x 23.967 fps x 21mbps .mov” I’m thinking of rendering it out to .wmv file or .mpg-2 .

I would like to keep the rendered video in HD 1280 x 720. I’m think of rendering out to .wmv file HD 1280 x 720 at 3 mbps or higher.

The question I have is, The video will only be played back from the disc drive not the H/D on a laptop pc. I do not want any possible skipping or hesitation.

What’s the highest quality settings with .wmv file when using HD 1280 x 720 in mbps before any possible playback problems? Or is there a better delivery format for this project and still keep it in HD 1280 x 720?

I edit with Sony Vegas 8.0C. In the render as window under .wmv I notice one of the passable TEMPLATES IS:
    4.8 Mbps HD 720-24p Video, 5.1 Surround

    “DESCRIPTION”
    Audio: 192 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, WMA9.
Video: 23.976 fps, 1280×720, WMV V9 CBR Compression, Smoothness 90.
Use this setting for high-quality HD video playback from a local hard drive.

My question on this is when they say Use this setting for high quality HD video playback from a local hard drive
I would imagine this would eliminate using a disc drive.

Any ideas, comments or help would be greatly appreciated.

You are on the right track with 720p WMV. Do not use MPEG2 as Windows does not come with a license for it so it will only play on laptops that already have 3rd party DVD player software installed. WMV is Windows native format and will play back on all Windows PC’s. Just make it WMV 9 and not WMV 11 or it might not play back on XP laptops unless they download the new media player.

I would do a test and see how smooth it plays back. 3Mbps seems like it should play back from a CD or DVD but the only way to be sure is render a small video at 3Mbps and see how it plays back. 4.8Mbps might be too high a bitrate for smooth playback from a CD but again, just test it for yourself and see.
