I’m in the market for a new camera. It’s to be used mostly for docs but as we are a small studio it will get a lot of other work (short films, EPKs, etc). I found a great camera recommended by a great documentary filmmaker, Albert Maysles.

He recommends the Sony PD170 for many reasons (https://www.mayslesfilms.com/companypages/albertmaysles/note.htm) a few being: super sensitive to light, super quiet, and a good stabilization mechanism.

It looks like a great camera, only problem is that it is SD. Does anyone know if there is a direct HD ‘remake’ of this camera or a good HD cam in the spirit of the PD170?

(I’ve been eyeing the Canon XH-A1. Not Sony but looks good, agree, disagree?)

    Thanks all,
    J Wooley

The Canon is realy a good camera…the most current HD successor to the PD170 (the HVR-Z1 was the first one) is the HVR-V1.

The Sonys are also good. I have a Z1 and I think it works well for the price. The HDV camcorders are a bit less light sensitive than the DV cameras were, so keep that in mind.

I’ve had good luck with the Sony Z1 and a friend of mine swears by it. The Canon is also a great option with the ability to customize with swappable lenses and an HD-SDI out.
