Working on a documentary where all footage is in standard def (mostly archive footage and other footage was shot with the Panasonic 100B Camera in 24p) in FCP 5 is there any way to make standard video HD quality. I know production houses could do it but they’re very expensive and I am looking for ways to do it for free. We have an agent that wants to represent the film but needs it in a HD format. Is there any way you can do this on FCP 5 or any other programs. Did a search on this topic but I couldn’t find it on here. I apologize for that, if there is one already please send me the link. Thank you.

If you want this to be done properly you simply have to do it through a post house or dub facility using a Terranex. Another way would require an HD capture card. The AJA Kona 3 can upconvert SD to HD…720p or 1080i, and the Decklink line to 1080i. Results are decent, but not as good as a terranex.

Then there is Instant HD by Red Giant Software. Not free, but OK.

Then there is Compressor. The Advance Conversion options are worth experimenting with.

But if you want the quality to be good…VERY good. Where someone is trying to represent you and sell your film, then you simply have to do it the best and proper way…Terranex. If they want your DV film to be in HD…and insist on it. Then I suggest you ask them if they are willing to pay for that. Because it isn’t a cheap proposition…done properly.
