  • HD tv spot delivery methods?

I’m an editior for a mid-range ad agency. I want to start giving my clients the option to have ther spots broadcast in HD. I’m cutting in converted prores loaded from HDV Canon XL-h1. My timeline is prores. What’s the best method besides getting a super expensive deck to deliver HD spots? I’m in the Boston market and some local spots I’ve started to see being broadcast in HD. Besides D5 deck, and XDcam, stations are accepting HD compressed on a Data DVD. Is there an alternative economical method to maximize quality? Also, I’ve compressed regular SD spots in Compressor as program stream Mpeg2. (That’s what DG usually wants) To get the best quality HD MPEG2 on a data dvd for delivery, what’s the best method? bit rate? steps in compressor? Any help would be much obliged. Thanks

It really depends on what file formats the broadcasters are accepting. HD mpeg2 transport streams are what they use generally but many prefer to encode their own from an HDCam tape.

Perhaps you should be asking them. Compressor of capable of creating HD .mts files but pixel aspects and data rates are up to the broadcasters to spec.

Really you have to ask the Station / Cable Head end / Network what their specs are. Everyone has their own specs and if they accept a digital file, there will be VERY specific requirements.

These specs will take you the exact codec, frame size, frame rate, data rate, audio rate, etc…. You will most likely have to make a different file for each place the spot is distributed to meet the various specs.

So start contacting whomever you plan to deliver the spots to and tell them you need their current Delivery Specs for commercials.

Do you deliver to DG in SD? They are quietly rolling out HD as well, it’s way more expensive, though. You would have to check with your local contact to check station availability. They are h264 files that you can make in Compressor via DG’s specs.

… And, to add to Walter’s comments, I’ve found that even when you get an answer from one company, you need to check with them the next time you’re ready to deliver because they keep changing their requirements too!

One week it’s, “Use DG”, and the next it’s, “We have our own internal system — here’s the FTP info”, and the next it’s, “Can you email the file via YouSendIt.com to our in-house guys?”

    Have fun!
