  • HD to web – resize in FCP or Compressor?

    Hi guys,

Is there a quality difference between the final product from the following workflows, both starting with 16:9 HD (1920×1080) H.264 video which needs to go down to 4:3 (360×270) for the web?

    1. encode to ProRes and edit in proper sequence (1920×1080), possibly sizing image larger at times to fit better, export and then to compressor to crop 16:9 off, scale down to 25%, and encode back to H.264

    2. encode to ProRes and edit in SD sequence (720×480), having more image to work with in FCP, but giving compressor a smaller video to encode

Any suggestions about other possibilities would be great.

I may use Smoothcam occasionally as well (FCP 6) – is it best to use that after editing/compositing/export is done in FCP or apply first before anything else done?

    Thanks.

Here’s what I do. Try keeping your current settings. Export using compressor.

Under settings go to Other Work Flows. Go to Web. Go to streaming. Go to Qucktime 7 compatible. Select H264 LAN Streaming. Drag that to the project your outputting. Then open up your inspector window. Click on the 5th tab on the right and adjust the cropping. Where it says “crop to” select the 4X3 option. Right now the frame size by default will be 4X3 but is set to 640X480 if that’s too large change it to 320X240. Target your destination and click submit.

I’m not sure what all that other crazy stuff you’re doing is, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Email me if you have problems and I’ll send you some screen grabs or save the settings and email you.

    Good Luck!

    Hi,

I’m at a loss as to how to convert an FCP project — shot HD, 16×9 — to a web-friendly 320×240, letterboxed, mpeg-4, mov file (specified by the website I’m trying to submit to).

I’ve spent all day trying to export using conversion, but the QT file either comes up cropped on the sides, or with a black frame all around, either way, it’s always 4×3 not widescreen.

Can someone help me PLEASE? Thank you in advance.

    Jenny
