  • HD to SD workflow?

    Hello,

Once again we are planning to gear up for DVC pro HD next year. I am a bit confused about the workflow and wonder if anyone could offer any advice.

Our need is to shoot in DVC Pro HD 1080i but master in 4:3 SD (cropped, not letterboxed); the reason for shooting HD is for an eventual HD version if that is ever requested but the initial delivery is 4:3 full-frame.

Would the idea be to online in HD and do some kind of down-convert to master the 4:3? Or is it better to capture the HD as SD for the online?

If we want to pan and scan is there any way to do that besides putting the full res HD on an SD sequence and rendering the whole thing?

My current plan is to invest in whatever Blackmagic hardware will do the job as we have had good results with Decklink so far. Any comments? What would the appropriate Decklink hardware be? Multibridge or a Decklink HD card? Can anyone suggest a good source of information about this process?

    thanks,

    Jason

    Hi Jason,

If you need realtime cropped output (centre cut), then you’ll need the Multibridge Extreme. This is the only product that has that feature.

Unfortunately, we do not have any real time pan and scan and you’ll have to do this in FCP and render.
