I want to find the best way to downconvert

    DVCPro HD 960×720 59.94

    to

    DVCPro50 720×480 29.97

I’ve tried copying the entire HD timeline and pasting it into a DVCPro50 timeline, but what happens is that some of the video shifts slightly, causing black frames and the sound loses all of its keyframe information. I’ve done a workaround where I export the file and then drop the exported file into a DVCPro50 timeline, but that produces a fuzzy imagine.

Any suggestions? Should I use very specific DV50 timeline settings to avoid the slight shift in frames? If so, what would they be? Or, is there a better solution?

I have a MacPro with AJA Kona video card.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is your intention to lay back to tape? What don’t you use your Kona’s realtime downconversion feature? That will give you better results than trying to do it in Final Cut. Otherwise, you could export the file from final cut, bring that into compressor, use that to downconvert and bring it back into Final Cut. Though I’ve never done that myself, I’ve read on this forum that it yields better results than doing it straight into Final Cut.

Downconvert to DV50 in realtime via the Kona.

[walter biscardi] “Downconvert to DV50 in realtime via the Kona.”

Actually you just set it up to downconvert to SD. The VTR will record it in DV50.

DV 50, yuck, I’d go to 8 bit uncompressed.

    Have a wonderful day.

Nothing wrong with DV50. I’ve seen many projects in that codec. It’s very clean.

Well, I was forced to use it once on an infomercial and I thought it was inferior to 8 bit. Just a subjective observation.

    Have a wonderful day.

DV50 is visually comparable to Digital Betacam.

And it exists as an actual tape format, which can’t be said for Uncompressed 8bit.
