  • HD to SD Picture Question

I have completed the HD version of a video of my daughters hockey season. There are video clips and some pictures. When I change the project properties from 1920×1080 to NTSC DV Widescreen, the video portions all look fine. The pictures have a small black line on both the left and right side. I have tried using pan/crop using restore and then match output aspect. There is indeed an improvement but it is slight. I have found that if I go into the picture properties and uncheck the maintain aspect ratio button the pictures will now fill the screen.

Why is this occuring and what is the best way for me to adjust the setting of the photos in the video in order for them to look right as they had in the HD version? Thanks

    Why is this occuring

Because the aspect of HD is true 16:9 and the aspect of DV Widescreen is slightly wider.

and what is the best way for me to adjust the setting of the photos in the video in order for them to look right as they had in the HD version?

Don’t change any thing in your project. Leave your project HD and render to MPEG2 DVD Widescreen and check the option “Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)“. Alternately, just drop the whole HD project into a DV Widescreen project and open Pan/Crop, right-click the frame and select Match Output Aspect. Personally, I do neither. The thin black lines aren’t even noticeable on a TV because they are outside the safe action area.
