  • HD to HDV for Broadcast

I’m producing a spot for broadcast and the
    spot submission instructions are:

High Definition (HD) spots must adhere to the following specs:
    • Must be a Quicktime File using the HDV1080i60 codec
(Apple Pro Res or MPEG2 will also work fine)
    • HD 1440 x 1080 aspect ratio at 29.97 FPS
    • Upper field first (interlaced)
    • Embedded Stereo Audio at least 48KHz
    • All graphics must be within HD safety title zone and 4:3 center-cut.
(otherwise the HD spot will be letter boxed when down-converted to SD)

Does this mean that the spot should have a ‘frame size’ of
1440×1080? The spot I’m exporting (current settings, self-contained)
has a frame size of 1920×1080. The original format was XDCAM.

Yup. 1440×1080 with the appropriate pixel aspect ratio. I would finish at 1920×1080, export (current settings) and bring the exported QT movie into a sequence with the appropriate specs. Using this method you’ll have a full raster copy in the event of sending it to another network that wants 1920.

If you change your sequence settings on your original sequence you’ll have to reconform things to match the new sequence, and items with motion attributes will move.

I recommend Apple ProRes422 instead of HDV. It’s higher quality.

WHy are you asking us? Only the network has the proper answer for that.

Personally, I’d tell them that your master is full raster 1920×1080, as you didn’t shoot HDV. So ask if they will take 1920×1080 ProRes QT.

It would only be 1440 x 1080 if HDV codec. I would send ProRes422 1920 x 1080 as it remains full raster and a much better codec. But call them to confirm pixel aspects on ProRes or mpeg2 codec as most broadcasters transmit HD as mpeg2 or mpeg4 – 1920 x 1080.
