Hi all just wanted to make sure i was on the right track. I may have a gig in the near future editing a feature which was shot on HD. I’m looking to save a boat load of dry hire money that has been alotted. Could u please check my workflow, i think it is viable what do u all think.
    My workflow:

    1. Capture dailies from the HD camera to a lower DV resolution on an external drive attached to my G4 iBook 1.25ghz then edit the feature using this lower resolution.

    2. Once completed & approved i could then take my FCP project into a HD suite and recap the used media to HD and output a master?

From my point of view I am thinking it is definately an easier way and will give me more time to be creative/detailed in the cut plus the more important bonus of being able to work from home. I know this is a basic workflow but i’m sure problems may arise. I have done this workflow before on trailers just want to see if it will translate to a feature.
Your thoughts are appreciated no matter how small.
    cheers
    Liam

    Liam,

With any other professional editing system one would certainly expect this simple scenario to work virtually flawlessly every time. However, with our beloved FCP this is not 100% assured. Be sure to use universal tape numbering conventions (i.e. 3 or 4 numbers and no characters), and don’t think for a minute that any speed changes will translate. You should be okay, but, a word of caution, don’t hold your breath… You may have to eyeball match a few things even under the best of circumstances.

    Good luck,
    DRW

I have used this same workflow from both HDCam and HDV. Because we used the same FCP version both to offline and then recapture as HD to online, I had no problem with sync, titles, grades or speed changes. Actually on one job, the font was missing, so take care to ensure that fonts from offline are loaded onto the online FCP.

As David points out, make sure reel numbers are correct during original capture. This is particularly important when dealing with timecode resets on DV/HDV. I prefer to label a DV/HDV tape that has code resets with A01, B01 etc to denote firstly that the tape has a break and that each break is recorded as a seperate reel, even though it is on the one same tape. 001, 101 ,201 etc works as well.

    Liam,

David is correct with his comments but one thing to check out. If you have the new FCS 5.1 Universal Upgrade, do a test to see if they have corrected the speed change with clips and Media Manager. From all of the info I have read, the new 5.1 upgrade was supposed to fix this major problem. I haven’t had a chance to try it out myself. But take a look at that first, it may save you some headaches in the future.

Good luck with your project and SAVE often!

Thx for the response guys! Always good to know u are on the right track. Yeah the speed problem with media manager has been a rather large thorn in my side when media managing the trailers i have done. I started getting in to a routine of setting a marker in the timeline anywhere i have changed the speed. Doing it on a feature scale will suck maybe i will look into the upgrade anyone actually got it and tested that problem???
    cheers again
