  • HD timeline question

Posted by Aaron Barrocas on April 30, 2007 at 7:36 am

I recently took on a project that will require me to incorporate great amounts of HD footage shot at 1080i with the new JVC Everio HD7 into the same timeline as standard DV footage. I only need to deliver in SD, so I was thinking about converting the HD clips to SD prior to cutting, so that I can cut the full project, DV and HD clips, in an SD timeline.

Any thoughts on the best export settings using quicktime, to preserve the greatest picture quality on the HD footage during the conversion? Compressor will not accept Everio’s TOD files.

    Thanks.

You can simply drop the HD footage into the FCP timeline, provided that FCP can read the files, and render.

Or you can play out the footage from the camera through something like an AJA Kona board and perform the downconversion to SD in realtime.

Good luck with the project, anything involving prosumer HD cameras can turn into a real nightmare when working with a professional NLE.

This camera is CONSUMER not Prosumer! This is JVC’s new HD version of Panasonic and SONY’s AVCHD.

If all else fails, Blackmagic makes the low cost Intesity card. You can go HDMI out of the Camera into the Intensity card.

[Steve Eisen] “This camera is CONSUMER not Prosumer!”

I found an online review of the camera I think from DV Magazine that called it a “prosumer” camera. I’ve honestly never heard of it, so I was going by that review.

The review I read called it a Consumer camera that uses the Fujinon lens that is used in Professional cameras.

These days, you can call anything Prosumer. Unfortunetely, when you get these cameras in the wrong hands, you are asking for trouble. They are going to flood this forum with their problems. Looks like it’s time to start a new forum on the Cow.

Heck get ANY Camera in the wrong hands and you’re asking for trouble. I recently did post for an HDCAM project that was shot horribly using the Sony CineAlta camera.

Was it the camera’s fault or the shooter who doesn’t know how to focus, hold a steady shot, or white balance?

You have to blame the operator. The days of point and shoot are over!

If it’s too much of a problem for you to post
helpful information, why bother with elitist
gibberish either? Isn’t this forum for everyone,
or is it just for people of a certain status?
(I know there is an FCP basic forum, but really Steve
    that is snotty)

Perhaps the camera will down convert to SD through the firewire?

Actually, there is a Creative Calf forum.

I am not being snotty. My point is, there are many people out there that are too lazy to read the manual. They come to this forum for a quick answer without trying to solve their problem on their own.
