I do not do very much HD editing. However I have a client who wants HD footage/BD, I have pro8 and i’m confused as to which template to use when I open Vegas there is (1280×720) (1440×1080) and (1920×1080) with with 29, 25 or 23fps options.

I choose the 108060i (1920×1080)29fps and when I edit it seems choppy as I go throguh the time line, when one clip dissolves into the other it is very choppy like it’s struggling to dissolve into the clip or when I add the white flash effect it does the same thing, seems like it’s having a hard time with the effect.

What is the appropriate HD template to use for editing and then also when rendering. Thank you for you help!

What is the source footage? If it is 1440×1080 then use that template for rendering.

If you import the footage into Vegas, it is usually smart enough to make your project settings the same as your initial footage that is placed on the timeline.

Vegas will do best if the project properties match the footage’s properties that is on the timeline.

If your footage is only standard definition, then edit in standard. If you are going to pass off standard definition as high definition, you will probably need to use the sharpen filter and then output to 1280×720 as it won’t look as odd as if you had a higher resolution output.

I am using SD and passing it off as HD since the client suddenly changed his mind after the shoot. Is this why I am having the problems?

I wouldn’t think so. If you are using titles and the like in your project, set your project settings to your HD render settings (what you intend to render this thing out at). That way, your titles and text will be at HD quality and will not undergo uprezz’ing.

My 2 cents: I would explain to the customer that it will not look as good in HD as it will in SD as the source footage is SD. They should have asked for HD on the front end. But, they are your clients and you handle it how you feel best.

[Paul Gilmore] “I am using SD and passing it off as HD…”

    Wrong!!
    That’s a good way to lose a client 🙁

“since the client suddenly changed his mind after the shoot.”

Then the client knows it’s not HD and may ask questions.
Since they changed their mind after the shoot, he gets what you shot or he pays you to shoot it again in HD.
After all, it’s his mistake, not yours and you shouldn’t have to pay for it.

Explain the sistuation to them honestly and see what they want to do.

In the end though does it really matter which HD template I choose?
whether editing in SD or HD??

Yes it does. If you, or your client doesn’t care about how it looks, then no- save it however you wish. But you want to make sure that if your source footage is NTSC and 29.97fps that your final is the same unless you prepare it for 24p. On the other hand if it is PAL, you will want to make sure that your output is Pal.

If you want some sort of quality, it does matter.

I should set project property to match output, then you will see how it looks when preview, and also get no suprises of black bars.

1270×720 will be the closest to SD.

Choppy where? In the preview or the final DVD? If it’s in the preview, then your PC doesn’t have enough horsepower to do real-time rendering for preview. Your final DVD does not need real-time rendering to be OK, it just takes longer.
