  • HD tapes converted to a file for editing?

Posted by Jerry Katz on December 16, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I have 2 HD tapes and my local production house will be converting the tape to a file and moving them onto my external H/D for editing with Sony Vegas 8.0C.

Here’s my question. The production house wants to know
if I want uncompressed QuickTime files or mpeg files.

Could some one tell me which files work best with
    Sony Vegas 8.0C.

    Thanks, Jerry K

What you really want is the raw format that is on the tape. It’s unfortunate that they are not offering that unless the tapes are HDV in which case you want the MPEG2 Transport Stream that is on the tape.

Can a Mac generate an MXF file that Vegas will recognize?

    Hi John,

The tapes we are having converted are Sony Digital HDVS tapes. I never heard of them before but the shell
is the same size has a mini Sony betacam tape.

HDVS is Sony-speak for “High Definition Video Systems” which means HDCAM.
If you can do it, the best bet is to get the post house to give you a sample of a variety of formats and see which one works best with Vegas.
