If I shoot DVCPROHD 720p 23.98, no problem finding a sequence setting to match it,
    I use AJA KONA 3 DVCPROHD 720p 23.98 Varicam.
If I shoot DVCPROHD 720p 29.97, there is no sequence settings for this with the
AJA KONA 3 settings. There is one from Apple called DVCPRO HD 720p30.
    Should I use that one?

I note that the AJA KONA 3 DVCPRO 720p 59.98 will work for 29.97 material, but
using DVCPRO 720p 59.98 is doubling the number of frames I have to record
and render and playback. I don’t want to record two frames for every one frame.
This takes up way too much space and also I find I get some dropped frames
when I try to use DVCPRO 720p 59.98 sequence, and this with an 8 TB Sonnet RAID.

I also notice, there is no DVCPRO HD 1080p 29.97 either from AJA, but here again,
there is one from Apple, DVCPRO HD 1080p30.

What do you guys do about these issues?

    Thanks,
    Dan

You have to make your own settings for 720p30 with AJA products.

Set up a 23.98 easy setup by hitting control-q and choose the correct codec and frame size and make sure it says ‘Varicam’ in the title.

Then go to audio video settings (option-command-q) and duplicate the 23.98 settings and change 23.98 to 29.97 in all the appropriate areas for your sequence and capture presets. Device control can remain the same. Hit the summary tab and choose ‘Create New Easy setup’.

[Dan Riley] “This takes up way too much space and also I find I get some dropped frames
when I try to use DVCPRO 720p 59.98 sequence, and this with an 8 TB Sonnet RAID. “

Then something is configured improperly as you should have PLENTY of bandwidth on the Sonnet.

[Dan Riley] “I also notice, there is no DVCPRO HD 1080p 29.97 either from AJA”

For this, you’d capture 1080i 29.97, then simply change your field rendering in FCP to ‘none’ and you will have to change all your captured clips to ‘none’ after you capture as well. It’s easy.
