    Hey,

I’m getting some weird artifacts on HD material that I’m resizing in an SD timeline. The rushes are ProRes 422 footage, being conformed to an uncompressed PAL SD sequence.

What’s happening is that there’s some weird banding / lines appearing all around the edges of the video –

This is the same frame, on the left the original rushes (without artifacting) and on the right, the rushes as rendered on the timeline, zoomed in on the upper left hand corner. As you can see, there are three lines of ‘banding’ along the top and edge of the video. This is happening to any of my HD rushes that I’m conforming to the uncompressed SD sequence.

Does anyone know what’s causing FCP to introduce these artifacts around the edges, and how I can avoid it?

    Cheers,
    Geraint.

You can’t use FCP to scale HD to SD. It doesn’t do a very good job.

Compressor does a better job, hardware does the best job. We use our AJA Kona boards to perform all our SD to HD and HD to SD conversions because it’s absolutely clean, broadcast quality conversions.
