I have DVC ProHD files at 720p, it is storing 960×720 at 4:2:2.

I need to get the image out to my ref but I can’t find the right setting.

I have a Decklink HD, I get playback but not at the right res the only settings that work are

    Blackmagic HDTV 720p 59.94 (1280×720)

I get playback in 10 bit but not the right screen res and playback in 8 bit that looks correct but I get horrible vertical mess.

I’m a bit of a novice with all these non-standard formats. CAn anyone help?

[Fiona_Fuchs] “I have DVC ProHD files at 720p, it is storing 960×720 at 4:2:2.”

This is correct. DVCPro HD is an anamorphic format, as is HDV.

This is also correct. Both the AJA Kona and the BMD cards play out the footage at full raster 1280×720.

My suggestion is to choose the appropriate Easy Setup for DVCPro HD 720. In my case it’s “AJA Kona 3 720/59.94 DVCPro HD.” BMD should have something similar.

Thanks Walter. I don’t get any of the DVC Pro settings in the video playback – only for easy set-up and then it’s looking for a DVC Pro out put – I’ll search the BMD website.

    Thanks for your help.

Video output should be set to 8bit 1280×720 or something similar.

What is the frame rate of your footage/timeline?

    Best,

Are you trying to lay something off or are you just trying to see it on your broadcast monitor?

    It’s a 24p framerate at 60hz

I am trying to see it on the monitor.

    Cheers!

Okay then, assuming that you have an HD Black Magic card, make sure in your Easy Setup window that you have the little box checked that says “show all”. Once you do this, in the Easy Setup pulldown menu, you will get a whole bunch of choices for different flavors of HD. You want the one that says “Blackmagic HDTV 720p 23.98 Varicam-DVCPRO HD”

When you bring in your footage as DVCPROHD (rather than as 10 or 8 bit), you must make sure that you choose the setups that end with the words “Varicam-DVCPROHD”, otherwise you will have to render (I guess not an issue in Final Cut 6? I don’t know though, still using version 5, and going to assume you are not using 6 either). All of the Easy Setups that use the Black Magic card to monitor will start with the words “Black Magic”. There for, if you are using footage that was shot in DVCPROHD at 1280×720 (or really 960×720 animorphic) at a frame rate of 23.98, then you would use the setup I listed above “Blackmagic HDTV 720p 23.98 Varicam-DVCPRO HD”.

    Cheers,
    Eli

    Thanks Eli,

I’ve done this and using the easy set-up, FCP gives me the Blackmagic HDTV 720p 59.94 (1280×720)8-bit setting as the output setting. All is good in my timeline, I don’t need to render. I can’t get a decent signal out to the ref monitor though. I’ve downloaded new drivers for the decklink. I am beginning to think the problem is not in my settings.

Could the Hz be an issue?

    I appreciate your help.

What do you mean exactly about not a getting a “good signal”? You are seeing picture though? Is is soft or is there noise or something?

    Best,
    Eli

At first it was as if I was seeing the picture through warped glass – though it was playing in real time. Then after playing around with the settings and settling on the original ones, I can’t get a good signal out. It Flicks every few frames. Sorry, i’m not great at explaining these things 😉

every few frames it will flick with a larger transparent image.

I hope you can decipher that code 😉

    {It plays fine with the HD-720p 10 bit setting but the screen res is wrong}

    Cheers
