HD rending issues with OLD computer
Hey guys,
Was wondering if you gentlemen could help me out.
My computer is about 5 years old, so it’s tough to render in HD but i’ve been doing it for a while now. It’s just a hassle but I get it done. I’m using Vegas 7. Rending in HD for me is a hassle because any fast image effect that messes with the image like “motion blurr” or even a simple ZOOM with pan/crop, the HD render can’t handle it. I’m guessing this is due to my computer being so old and need to upgrade. But was looking for an alternative.
It crashes and can’t handle a simple very fast Zoom (transition to the next clip)
The clips are 1280×720 mostly.
Here’s what my settings have been:
Render type: Video for windows .AVI
Vid Format: Xvid MPEG-4 codec
Template: HDV 720-30p intermediate
Frame size: HDV 720(1280×720)
Frame Rate: 29.970(NTSC)
Field Order: None (Progressive Scan)
Pixel Aspect: 1.000
Bit Rate: 3000

You might consider upgrading to Vegas Pro 9.0. Vegas 7 barely handled HD and Vegas Pro 8.0 improved on HD performance considerably, and Vegas Pro 9.0 improved on it again. If you’re going to use the latest formats, you need to keep your software updated to the latest levels to handle them.
You didn’t say what the specs of your computer are but if it’s not at least a Core 2 Duo, you might want upgrade that too. 5 years is a long time to use a computer for video editing. You got your money’s worth out of it.

Man thanks alot. Your post is very helpful, and enlightening.. I didn’t think that still having version 7 would make that much of a difference.
Oh sorry, yeah my specs are:
Dell dimension INTEL
Celeron CPU 2.53GHz
1 gig of RAMAnd i’ve only been editing on this for about 2 years though really.. But yeah, I can tell i’m still kind of lucky.

Yea, that is quite old. In the general scheme of things… most “modern” computers for video editing are Quad Cores. Dual Cores are considered “old” technology by today’s standards, and single core Pentiums would be considered “ancient”. Celeron’s were the low-end/economy alternative to the Pentium line, having less power than a Pentium (if I remember correctly) and were marketed for word processing and other “non-multimedia” tasks. Lots of home computers had them. So you are really pushing the limits with that processor and HD. 😉
But I know… sometimes ya’ gotta use what ya’ got. Download the trial of Vegas Pro 9.0 and see if it makes a difference. With that processor, it might not since much of the improvement has been around maximizing multiple cores which you don’t have. Definitely try before you buy. Even the Sony web site recommends a multi-core computer for HD editing so your PC is definitely below the recommended specs. 🙁

Wow, thanks a bunch John.. Kind of depressing.. Heh.
Because I won’t be able to get any upgrade for a while. Financial issues you know.. But I guess I’m gonna have to settle with rendering it in HQ or maybe I can render much of it in HD, and some parts that have effects I think might make it crash, do in HQ then re-render in HD. Heh.. I dunno.
But yes i’ll just settle with HQ for now if I have to 🙁
Thanks alot though. I can’t wait till I can get some new stuff for editing. New PC and upgrade Vegas, or maybe get a mac for Final Cut Pro.
