I have also posted this message in FCP Basics.

I have a project with HD footage (1080p24). I would like to playout a sequence to a mini DV deck via firewire.

I assume that I will need to export the sequence in some form to compressor and change it to a DV format before I “print to video”. I would also like to know if I can burn a DVD with these same settings or would I need to do it differently with DVD pro.

This former Avid editor sure could use some advice. Thank you in advance.

Nest the HD sequence in a DV timeline.

For the DVD export the HD sequence using compressor.

Do I nest the HD sequence by copying it into a DV project? Thank you.

Really, simply nesting will add a true pullown? A hidden gem!

I assume the HD 24p is actually 23.976. You can nest the HD sequence into a DV 23.98 Anamorphic sequence. FCP 5 will add a pulldown when playing to tape, so you do not need to convert to 29.97.

Likewise, you can author a DVD with 23.98 Anamorphic material, and it will play out correctly from the DVD. You just need to make sure your settings when authoring specify anamorphic wide screen media (so that the DVD player “knows” to add a letterbox to SD aspect display) and the frame rate (so the DVD spits out pulldown on output). You can send the HD directly to Compressor and use a DVD preset. Give yourself some time. There ya go!

Just one thing to add, when you make the DVD you can choose the widescreen option if you don’t want it to letterbox on widescreen sets.
