HD player
I am trying to research for ways to play back HD footages. Here are some findings, but I wish for something more.
1. G-Player – does not play .m2t files (even handling some semi-HD formats, it is only upconvert.)
2. PS3 or other settop “HD DVD Players” – Requires an intermediate burning of a DVD (at least the data files)
3. Apple TV – The best option so far, but itunes won’t handle .m2t! I have to convert it to something else first!
4. Play from the Camcorder, of course, but, getting the edited HD footage back to tape is next to impossible, with current PPRo 2.0. (Major Lost of PQ!)
5. Build a pc or laptop for it, play with DVI output? (PQ come close?)Anything else out there?????

Toshiba has players that can playback WMV-HD and maybe M2T files. I am not sure if that is something you may be interested in. Steven Gotz may chime in about this issue.

I think I read Steve’s option. But, the player is no longer manufactuering? and it still needs the intermediate step in copying the file to DVD.Perry

There is also some upscaling settop players that will playback Divx encoded 1080i ;starting to hit the market.

At this point, for any HD content that I need to play back (more and more requests for live events), I use WMVHD out of an HP DV9000 laptop with HDMI out (You can use a DVI adapter as well)
The picture quality is really impressive, and the playback is seemless at 1080P. BTW, I use a player called zoom player. It allows control on one screen and playback on the other.
Of course, you could also request an HDCAM deck for Chritsmas 😉

I’ve used a JVC HD disc player for many playback situations…works like a charm, and it’s dirt cheap:

Does your laptop comes with HDMI Output? Or is there any HDMI PCMCIA Card? How do you get to “WMVHD” format? Did you edit in PPro and then convert it that way?Perry

When you say dirt cheap, are you saying $350+? Obviously you are a richer man than I. Haha… anyway, by BD, you mean BlueRay? The burner is still pretty high price, isn’t it? Anyway, Thanks.

Yes, this laptop had a direct HDMI out, which is great for plasmas, but for switching, I need to use a DVI adapter.
I usually export my timeline using Premiere’s WMV encoder. If I have the time, I export uncompressed and use Windows Media Encoder, which gives you much more control.

That is the JVC version of mine. It isn’t perfect but it works and I would not have been so happy with HDV for the last two years without it. I only paid $249 but mine does not upscale SD to HD. I certainly will have gotten my money out of it before it hits the scrap heap (or EBay when I get Blu-Ray).

Is there a specific budget you had in mind? I’m not sure you’re going to find anything decent for less than the price of that JVC (maybe a Toshiba HD-DVD player, which can play HD content burned to DVD-R).
