HD P2 Footage. HELP!
Posted by James Wright on May 24, 2009 at 1:00 pmHi,
im gunna try and include as much info as i can so sorry about how long post is:
Im using FCP 5 on a Dual 2 GHZ power PC g5:
Ive got a tonne of footage shot on P2 card, but not all of it is importing into FCP. for some clips i get the error “one of more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt files.”, however they play fine in the panasonic P2 application and have imported into a avid suite fine and played.
On closer inspection in the panasonic application the particular clips all have the HD icon in the corner, and can only assume they have been shot on a different format.
Is there any way i can get these clips into FCP? either by changing the setting its in or by some other measure?
Thanks to everyone for taking time to read this.

May 24, 2009 at 1:47 pmWithin the Panasonic Application(I assume P2CMS) there is a way for you to look at the metada which would tell what format they are and then that might be the answer to your question. But someone would have had to try hard to change the camera to a different format.
It does seem odd that they work on the Avid and not the FCP, but I am not the expert on either edit platforms. Hopefully some of the other guys here can chime in.
Good luck,

May 24, 2009 at 2:11 pmWell, not sure how it happened but the DV50_422 is a standard def clip and the DV100_720P clip is HD. You do have 2 different formats. How you get both onto the same timeline, I don’t know, perhaps one of the FCP guys can chime in here.

May 24, 2009 at 4:46 pm#36 – One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane’s Stock Answer #36 – “One or more clips failed to import…”
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don’t like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)…the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window…is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO…in the P2 Import window…in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO…make sure your file names aren’t too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn’t have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

May 24, 2009 at 7:15 pmThe screenshot Shane posted is from the “Log and Transfer” window in FCP 6, not 5.
IIRC, FCP 5.0.4 had all kinds of trouble trying to import P2 files by itself. When we used it, we had to use P2 Log to log and export the files to Quicktime, then import the XML files into FCP.

May 24, 2009 at 7:31 pmFCP 5.0.4 was the first version to support P2, and was not without issues. You really need to upgrade.

May 24, 2009 at 7:47 pmWith all due respect, i hardly have any money to upgrade and its while i appreciate the suggestion its hardly constructive given my problem is it?

May 24, 2009 at 8:05 pmHow was I know what you could afford? It is a perfectlyconstructive answer. Another one would be to buy P2 Log. Cheaper. It exports to QT too.
Again, FCP 5.0.4 had issues.
