    Hey All,

Just a quick question (I didn’t find this in the archives, but if this has been disucssed already, my apologies!). Does HD for broadcast have an overscan region, or does it display full frame on an HDTV (both LCD and Plasma). Our onine monitor is a HD capable CRT (which I know has overscan), but I can’t seem to find any info regarding LCDs and Plasmas. If HD does have overscan, are the FCP title/action safe regions for HD accurate?

    Thanks!

I’ve asked this myself, and never gotten an answer that seems definite. However our specs for action/title safe from ESPN for commercials is the standard percent as in SD. So FCP’s safe lines are accurate.

They are and they’re fine for some networks. However, I have Action / Title Safe specs from one network that are far inside the horizontal safe title area of FCP.

You really need to get specs from the network you’re delivering to as they can change from network to network.

Networks that constantly run a crawl at the bottom of the screen may have different spec.

Ran into this with ESPN (not commercials, but programming)

And all networks don’t have their bug in the same location. We deliver an international show with the bug on the left, so we have to keep all our lower thirds 261 pixels from the left side of the image.

similarly some networks may broadcast both an HD 16:9 signal and an SD 4:3 (or 14:9) signal … in that case you would still need to use 4:3 title/action safe
