  • HD over 1GigE network in AE?

    Hi all,

Wasn’t sure where to put this as the XServe forum has now gone…I’ve posted on HD forum, but if any of you AE guys have any tips that’d be ace…?

Anyway – situation is this…We work on large mograph/edit sequences (5 x 720p screens & 10-30 mins duration) pretty much exclusively in After Effects over a 1GigE network. We capture some DV footage over firewire in FCP, but most footage comes over FTP or on disc as DV, uncompd SD and in the next week or so – HD quicktimes)

Now I know we won’t get much realtime throughput to edit uncompd HD footage in FCP over a 1GigE, but as far as working reasonably comfortably in AE with this kind of footage, how do you think we’d fair with this setup?…

    4 x macpro workstations (running Nucleo – 3xQuads & 1xOcto w/8GB ram on each)
    3TB XServe in RAID 10
    1GigE switch

All footage, projects, assets are all stored on and accessed from the XServe simulatneously.

So, if anyone can chip in and give a bit of advice on whether this workflow should be ok or any tips on how to improve it that’d be great?

-Would 10GigE or Fibre Channel for XServe>Macs help rather than 1GigE?
-Would local RAID-0 scratch drives on the Macs help?
    -Anything else?

I’m fairly new to working over a network and we’ve not really stretched the server connection much past 4 x concurrent DV access/capture.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
    Jim.

I would recompress the video to prorez and that’ll slim down the bandwidth. Pushing Uncompressed HD over GigE creates alot of smoke breaks for me.
