HD Online
Hi everyone,
I have a question with regards to the process of online for Panasonic P2 HD. The post production house that is doing online for my short film says that they will convert my edited footage which is shot at 720pn (960 x 720) to uncompressed 1920 x 1080 for the online color grading and final output in FCP. I don’t understand the logic behind this and does it means that I’m losing quality in my original footage since there’s a huge difference between the frame size of 960 versus 1920?

NP2 is an anamorphic format. It’s meant to be stretched to 1280×720. It’s a cheat to begin with.
The problem they’re probably facing is their gear can’t deal with 720/24fps easily – it’s a niche format. I’ve done this myself: blow up 720/24 to 1080 for delivery to a telecine house. I wouldn’t worry in the slightest. If it’s a good upconversion it’ll probably look better than the native DVCPRO files.

I have just done exactly this in FCP so that 720p can be delivered as HDCam 1080 50i and interlaced SD for the broadcaster.
Broadcast is interlaced so either 1080 50/60i or 576/480i. SD is interlaced so just relax and let the pros do their work.

Broadcast HD is NOT limited to 1080.
ABC, FOX, ESPN and many PBS stations deliver content at 720p 50/60 in North America.

If you are delivering to a specific broadcaster then as always ask what they want and will accept. I deliver to international distributors as well as specific broadcasters and both HD and SD are always speced as 1080 50/60i or SD interlaced. The world is a big place so what a few broadcasters do in North America doesn’t really change the day to day reality of facilities that need to make one master for all markets.
Until international broadcast deliverables change to include 720p, I will continue to advise conversion to 1080i.
