I will be editing a project shot with an HVX 200 in 720p HD.
I have a powerPC G5 dual 2.5 GHz and plan on updating the video card to an ATI Radeon X1900; will update to 5 Gigs memory, and get a Graid external drive.

My question is: will this system be able of handling the editing in HD? And if not, what other updates do you guys suggest?

I started editing HD on a G4 so you’re fine. If you plan to do uncompressed HD, you’ll need a much faster drive.

But you can literally cut DVCPro HD on a laptop, so you’re good with the G5.

    Thanks Walt,

So then what would you suggest for my drive situation?

So then what would you suggest for my drive situation?”

For DVCPro HD you’re fine. For Uncompressed HD, you need a minimum 5 Drive SATA array capable of sustaining 200MB/s throughout the array.

We’re running MaxxDigital ProAVIO 8TB SAS/SATA arrays which run approx. 500MB/s in RAID 5.

I am editing DVCPRO HD on my Dual 2Ghz G5…still running like a champ. Using CalDigit S2VR Duo eSATA drives and G-Raid firewire drives. And I deliver HDCAM masters.

    No issues…works like a charm.

Actually, thanks for reminding me. We run DVCPro HD 720 and 1080i projects on our Dual 2.0 G5 with a few LaCie S2S units. We use it primarily for documentaries and BluRay projects.

Before purchasing the X1900, make sure your G5 has a PCI Express slot and NOT a PCI-X slot. I almost made that mistake.

    Thanks Simon,

What the best way to check this?

    Thanks Shane,

It looks like I won’t be able to upgrade the video card. Which video card are you using on your system?

[Arturo Marroquin] “Which video card are you using on your system?”

ATI 9800 Pro. OLD card….but it is an old computer.

    hey thanks Shane. Underdog rules!

I also have an old (maybe I should use the word, ancient) system, with a PCI-only slot and an ATI 9600 XT video card.

I want to give it a boost though–do you have any suggestions on what video card I should upgrade to, given my system’s limitations?
