    Hi,

in my school we have the following:
One computer with Avid Media Composer (which handles HD)
    Many computers with Avid Express

Now, I’m trying to find a way to work with my HD files in Avid Express. Do you think this is the solution?:

I import my HD files in a HD project in Media Composer (a 1080i50 project).

I transcode all the files into DV25 422-files.

I then change the Format of the project to DV25 (from 1080i50).

I can now open the DV25 project in Avid Express, do the edit, then reopen the project in Composer and change the project to 1080i50 again.

The last thing i must do is to relink all the clips in the timeline to the HD clips: Clips – Relink – Relink Method: Highest quality.

I really hope this solution will work. My question is, can you guys see any obvious errors in this workflow?
Which other way can you do “offline” HD editing in Avid Express?

    Thanks,
    Lars

What version of Avid Xpress does your school have, and where is your HD source footage coming from (HDCAM, Red, P2, XDCAM HD, etc…)?

I know the last version of Xpress Pro could handle HD footage, particularly P2. Xpress DV is obviously DV only, in which case your method should work fine. Test it with a small sample project to be sure, but what you’ve outlined is basically the proper workflow for an HD offline on Avid.

    Thanks, good to hear

I’m not 100% sure which version of Xpress but I believe it’s the DV version. I know it doesn’t support HD!

The HD source material is from P2.

    Is this right?:
This method will not work with 720p50 material, because it doesn’t correspond to 50i? (like 1080i50 and 576i50)

I believe you’re right. You need to have a corresponding frame rate in SD in order for a transcode to SD to work. Now if your Media Composer is 4.0 you can mix framerates on the timeline, but that won’t help you with an offline edit on an XpressDV system.

Definitely test your workflow before you start any major projects. Especially if you’re shooting in HD only framerates.

Also make sure you transcode to OMF media, I don’t believe Xpress DV can work in MXF.

Well right after I posted I found MXF was introduced with Xpress DV 4.5

    Sorry.

    Thanks for answering.
I’m unsure about one more thing:

When I’m gonna relink the SD clips to their corresponding HD clips, do they HAVE TO have the exact same name?

If so is the case, I have a problem: When I transcode to SD, all the SD files gets a .new ending. Is this a problem when relinking? (the HD and the SD have slightly different names) Is is some way to inactivate this change off name?

The name of your master clips won’t matter. Avid relinks via embedded metadata in your media – I believe it’s tape name and timecode. If you’re doing a transcode to DV it should easily relink to the HD.

Again, test it to be sure you understand the workflow exactly and that it works exactly as you expect it to.
