HD link problem
Posted by Vince Sanchez on July 29, 2008 at 8:47 pmI am trying to get my HD LINK to work with a Samsung HDTV through HDMI with no luck.
If I connect my HD link to my LG computer monitor through DVI it works great. If I connect the SAmsung to my mac using the DVI to HDMI connnector and cable, it works fine.
When I connect the Samsung to the HD link using the same DVI to HDMI cable and connector, I get nothing, no communication at all.
Any idea would be greatly appreciated.
ThanksThanks,
Vince Sanchez

July 30, 2008 at 5:21 amHi Vince,
I don’t know which model of Samsung HDTV you are using, and which format(s) of video you have tried, but some TV’s don’t support 720p50 and that format might or might not work with your TV.
It sounds as though you have the original HDLink and it does not support standard definition video via HDMI. It does support HD via HDMI and it does support SD and HD via DVI. The HDLink Pro supports SD and HD via both DVI and HDMI as well as 2K support via DVI.
So if you are trying to output SD via HDMI, that could explain your problem.
If you are attempting to output HD via HDMI, what do you see on the Samsung HDTV, eg black or perhaps some kind of distorted video? We have several Samsung displays here and they all work fine with HDLink.

July 30, 2008 at 9:13 amLuke, thanks for the input.
What I have been trying to do is send 720p 59.94 to the HD link. At this point the HDTV does not acknowledge the HD link. I get a message no devices connected.
If I move the connection from the HD link to the mac DVI it works immediately. When I move the cable back, I get the message, check your cable, no signal.
the HD link is about 6 months old and came with the DVI to HDMI adapter. I also you might misunderstand what I’m doing because my profile was so out of date. See updated profile below. Thanks,

July 30, 2008 at 5:53 pmHey Vince,
As a test could you hook up the HDLink to your Cinema display? So if you are using two monitors, or have a second monitor you can put as the primary monitor of your Mac.
By doing this we can verify the HDLink against a known compatible monitor (cinema display). If the HDLink doesn’t work with the Cinema display it could mean there is a problem with the unit. If it does work then it could be a setting on the monitor, or the monitor may just not be compatible.
Again the most important part of doing this test is establishing that the HDLink is working properly.

July 30, 2008 at 8:13 pmThe HD link works when its hooked up to a 19″ LG monitor. The Samsung works when it is hooked up to my Macpro or my G4 powerbook, this is done using the DVI to HDMI adapter that came with the HDlink.
The only configuration that does not work is when the HD link is connected with this adapter through HDMI to the Samsung.
The problem seems to be that the HD link is not putting out something that the Samsung needs to see it as an HDMI signal.
Is there a way to see what firmware HD link is using? I am using the HD link utility 2.5.1.Thanks,

July 30, 2008 at 9:27 pmIf you have the latest version of the driver installed on your machine, hook up the HDLink to the computer via USB. Open the HDLink utility and if it prompts for an update then let it update. If it does not prompt an update then the firmware is up to date.
Two other things.
1> What format of video are you using? Because HDMI out will not work properly with SD formats.
2> Some TVs will not support SD video over HDMI that is not 480p (which our device only outputs 480i).Both of these could be an issue.

July 30, 2008 at 11:58 pmI have only been trying to output HD footage DVCpro HD at 720p.
The Samsung doesn’t even see the HD link, it says no devices connected. Yet as soon as I move the cables to one of my computers the monitor connects to the computer and it works perfectly. Thanks,

August 2, 2008 at 4:36 amI have gone back and read my monitors manual, it is a Samsung 19inch series 330 LCD TV. They say the HDMI input can take a signal from a DVI to HDMI connector. It also says in the manual that it can accept among other many other resolutions a 1920×1080 signal.
Again my problem seems to be that I can input a signal from my mac pro and powerbook just fine. My LG 19 inch monitor can get a signal from the HD link. There is just NO communication between the HDlink and the Samsung. What could be missing from the signal that would prevent the Samsung from seeing the HDlink.
Here is a link to the manual, on page 36 there is a detailed description of how their HDMI input is implemented and what it accepts. Maybe it can tell someone what is missing from the signal. Thanks
