I got sent some HD footage of a concert that a client wants put to DVD. I’ve never dealt with HD before, but when i rendered the footage which was on a 720×480/NTSC timeline, the footage didn’t play right. It just flashed between two images, while the audio played normally.
I want to eventually make this into 720×480 footage, how do you usually deal with HD in Final Cut? I’m on 5.1.4 at work–but I’ll try it again on my home computer, which has 6.0.

    Thanks, Josh

What type of HD footage did they give you?

There’s no reason to put the footage in an SD timeline just because it will end up on a SD DVD. Drop it into a timeline in FCP 6 and let it change to match the footage and edit away.

Once edited just export a QT reference file and make a SD the same way you would normally using Compressor and DVDSP. Compressor will do the down-conversion. Just be sure to check the 16×9 setting and DVDSP will create a DVD that displays 16×9 on a widescreen and letterboxed on a 4×3 TV.

Next time do a Search on this forum for HD to SD or HD to DVD and you’ll get a lot of answers instantly.

Edit your HD footage in an HD timeline.

    Export a Quicktime Reference.

Open Compressor and compress in the DVD setting of your choice.

Send the MPEG-2 files to DVDSP and create a 16:9 DVD.
