I have an SD project that is almost complete, but I need to throw a clip in there that was shot on HD with the Sony PMW-EX1 (1080i).
My sequence settings are uncompressed 720 X 486. I have an AJA Kona card.
When I throw the HD clip onto my standard timeline, the clip looks terrible…really blocky and pixelated.
What am I doing wrong? On an HD timeline the clip looks great, but I need to bring it into my SD project and timeline, which again is uncompressed 720 X 486.
    Thanks.

Apply Shift Fields to the HD shot and render. Your HD is Upper Field First. Your SD is Lower Field First. Hence the HD footage is reverse interlaced in the SD timeline. FCP should apply this filter automatically and if you have not rendered, it will appear blocky.

We use our AJA Kona boards to do the downconversion of HD clips to SD via hardware.

I checked and Final Cut did automatically shift the field for me. I tried rendering it and it still looks bad. Any other ideas?
